The first thing to do is tear down your old diff completely, including removing all the bearing races from the case and having it cleaned. Ours was cleaned in a hot tank, then bead blasted and steam cleaned.
After the cleaning, the next step is to press the pinion cups into the case and the bearings onto the pinion gear and LSD unit.
Once the bearings are installed we now can fit the pinion gear into the case. We machine a solid pinion spacer to do this, which is far stronger than the crush sleeve shown on the left. Solid spacer is shown on the right. The spacer is placed on the pinion then assembled into the case and checked for preload with a dial indicator.
This spacer needed to be shortened so the final adjustment was made in our lathe.
Now that the pinion is set we press in the pinion seal and assemble the pinion in the case. We use high strength thread locker on the pinion nut and because we have the solid pinion spacer we tighten with an impact gun.
With the pinion set we can now install the ring gear to the LSD unit. We like to warm up the ring gear a little which lets it slip right on the LSD unit without any hammering or pressing. Next we use high strength thread locker on the ring gear bolts and torque to specs.
Once the ring gear is installed on the LSD we place it along with the outer bearing races into the case. Then carefully fit the spanner nuts into the case, then the caps and bolts.
With the caps installed we can set the backlash and bearing preload. We check the backlash at the outer diameter of the ring gear and set it to specs. Always check the backlash in more than one place on the ring gear to make sure its the same.
Now we can torque the cap bolts, we like to stick an axle in and use it as a lever while torqueing the cap bolts.
We check the backlash again then we use dye check on the ring gear to check the gear contact pattern. This lets us see how the pinion gear contacts the ring gear as it would during use in the car. The dye is applied then we turn the pinion while holding the ring gear to simulate load, this smears the dye as the gears come together.
You can see the gray area in the dye on the right, this shows the contact of the pinion to the ring gear and its perfect. We can now finish up. All that is left to do is install the lock tabs, stake the pinion nut and paint.
The finished unit is now ready to put in the car. Make sure you use high quality limited slip gear oil when installed!
